Orientation

Our volunteer orientation covers an introduction and overview of Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, the Commit for Life program, the patients that we help, volunteer opportunities, policies and procedures, safety and enhancing the donor experience. Bilingual volunteers are always needed.

Volunteer Life-Saving Opportunities

Thank You Crew

  1. Purpose: Thank You Crew volunteers ensure that the donor has an exceptional donor experience and educate donors about the benefits of Commit for Life.
  2. Responsibilities: Welcome and thank donors; maintain donor schedule; answer basic questions about the donation process; observe donors for reactions after their donation; serve refreshments; and encourage donors to Commit for Life.
  3. Qualifications: Volunteers should be dependable, friendly, attentive and enjoy people. There is a minimum two-hour commitment for each event.

Community Outreach

  1. Purpose: Community outreach volunteers motivate prospective donors to Commit for Life, and educate the public about the need for donations, the patients that blood donations help and the importance of Commit for Life.
  2. Responsibilities: Educate the public at health fairs, community events, media blood drives and sign-up tables at churches, business and schools.
  3. Qualifications: Community outreach volunteers are friendly, outgoing, persuasive and committed to spreading the word. 

Speakers' Bureau

  1. Purpose: Speakers support community outreach by speaking to groups and raising awareness about Commit for Life.
  2. Responsibilities: Share your story if you or someone you know has received blood, or simply speak about the importance of giving blood and explain the Commit for Life program.
  3. Qualifications: Speakers must be friendly, outgoing and persuasive, have excellent public speaking skills and be comfortable presenting to groups of diverse size and makeup. Requires additional training. 

Community Advocates

  1. Purpose: Community Advocates support Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center by working as part of a group to raise awareness about their local Neighborhood Donor Center, encouraging their community to Commit for Life.
  2. Responsibilities: Attend monthly meetings at their Neighborhood Donor Center to identify opportunities to raise awareness about Commit for Life in their communities. Spread the word through work, school, your place of worship or any other group in which you belong. Community Advocates also plan quarterly blood drives at their Neighborhood Donor Centers.
  3. Qualifications: Be a team player. These volunteers are community and goal-oriented. 

Blood Drive Chairperson

  1. Purpose: A blood drive chairperson organizes and implements a blood drive program in their community, school, business or place of worship.
  2. Responsibilities: Actively recruit donors. Work with Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center to schedule and promote your blood drive. If possible, form a committee of co-workers, neighbors, etc. to assist with planning. To learn more, visit the Commit for Life Group Program page
  3. Qualifications: This volunteer is a community-minded team leader who is organized, enthusiastic, able to delegate and goal-oriented.

Office Support

  1. Purpose: Office support volunteers assist with work in various departments at Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center's headquarters and at Neighborhood Donor Centers.
  2. Responsibilities: Duties include filing, mail-outs, follow-up phone calls, data entry, preparation for special events, copying and answering the phones.
  3. Qualifications: Office support volunteers should be detail-oriented and able to work with a team.
